Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering, Ahmedabad is a premier engineering institute in Gujarat State which was set up with the objective of imparting higher education, research and training in various fields of engineering & technology. The institute is affiliated to Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, and is administered by Department of Technical Education, Gujarat state, Gandhinagar. This institute was established in June 1948 with a generous donation of
Rs. 25 lacs and 31.2 hectares of land by the textile magnate Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai. It is situated adjacent
to Gujarat University and is located at the nucleus of various national level institutes such as PRL, ATIRA, CEPT, ISRO, IIM, etc. The college was named as Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering. The campus has buildings for various departments, offices, hostels, residences of principal, rector and wardens.
The institute made a modest start with 75 students for undergraduate
programs in 1948. In June 1955, admission seats were increased to 150. In June 1957 these admission seats were further increased to 300 for degree program. From June 1963, degree and diploma institutions were separated administratively but were functioning in the same buildings. Post graduate
program in Electrical engineering was introduced in 1954. Since then the institute has undergone
continuous growth in magnitude, diversity and accomplishments. P.G. course in Mechanical Engineering was started from June 1963, in the area of refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Post graduate course in Civil Engineering was started in June 1970 in Soil Engineering and Structural Engineering and in Public Health Engineering in June 1972. To meet with demands of industries, masters
programs in Computer Aided Structural Analysis & Design and Water Resources Management were introduced in 1986 replacing the previous Civil Engineering courses. Masters course in Computer Application commenced in 1987 and in Cryogenic engineering commenced from August 1990. Masters course in CAD/CAM is proposed from this year. The study
center for IGNOU programs leading to B. Tech. degree in Construction Management and Water Resources Management have been started in 1995. Since then, the institute has undergone continuous growth in magnitude, diversity and accomplishments.
 The Institute made modest start with 75 students in conventional branches like Civil, Mechanical and Electrical for under graduate
programs initially and was affiliated to the Bombay University. From June 1950 onwards, it has been affiliated to the Gujarat University.
Girl students are exempted from paying tuition fee. Hostel facility in campus/outside campus for boys & girls or other type of accommodation available in the city/town.
The institute has 6 hostel blocks providing accommodation to 750 students. There are four messes in the hostel complex managed by students themselves. Hostels are administered by Rector & four Wardens. Girls students are provided hostel facilities in Govt. Girls Hostel near Gujarat College. Admission to the Girl students are given on merit based on the vacancies by the Hostel Supdt. of Govt. Girls Hostel.
Each department has modern, fully equipped laboratories for Under Graduate courses. In addition to practicals and projects of students, the laboratories also cater for testing facilities to industries.
All departments have separate Computer Centers to cater needs of Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses. Computer center of computer section has Sun work station with Solaris,
O. R. G. super max system, Pentium based multimedia system and large number of PC-AT-486 and PC-XT computers, Laser printers, Dot Matrix printers, Desk Jet Printers.
Faculties available :
The faculty consists of about 180 teaching staff members from diverse disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Electronics & Communication, Instrumentation & Control, Computer Engg., Textile Technology, Rubber Technology, Plastic Technology, Chemistry, Environment, Geology, Mathematics and Humanities. Besides their primary commitment to Undergraduate education, they are also actively involved with industries through testing, consultancy, training, continuing education and research
programs.
Other information:
Library: Institute has a well established library having about 62,000 technical books and about 150 periodicals. The library has latest collection of books, hand books, encyclopedia and Indian Standards.
The routine daily functions of library are being operated with help of a "Automation Software modular package" which includes management of a wide variety of materials like books, slides, audio and video cassettes, paper clipping, magazines, maps, charts, equipments and electronics documents.

The L. D. Alumni Association was founded in 1995. Within such a short period of time, its strength has grown
up to nearly 1500 members coming from various walks of life. The members occupy key positions in Governments, Education and Industries in India and Abroad. The association serves as a platform for addressing the needs of
L. D. C. E. Alumni, Students and the Campus. It also serves as in important link between the past and present students.
The association regularly organizes various activities like Cultural Festivals, Navratri Celebrations, Annual Alumni Convention, Students Farewell and Industrial Exhibitions.
